Criteria
A person is eligible for registration or enrolment as a nurse on the register or roll and /or alternatively a person is eligible for registration as a midwife on the midwifery register if the person:
- has qualifications approved or recognised by the Board;
- has met the requirements determined by the Board;
- is medically fit to provide nursing and /or midwifery care;
- is a fit an proper person.
The Nursing & Midwifery Board of South Australia (nmbSA) issues to each nurse or midwife an Annual Practicing Certificate for up to a 12 month period ending 31 August each year. The practicing certificate is the individuals licence to practice and is documented verification that the person whose name appears on the certificate is a nurse or midwife.
Limitations
If an individual cannot meet all of the above requirements, limitations may be applied to their practice which would be indicated on their practicing certificate.
Limitations which can be placed on an individual's practice may include one or more of the following:
- a condition restricting the places or times at which the person may provide nursing or midwifery care;
- a condition limiting the nursing or midwifery care that the person may provide;
- a condition limiting the period during which the registration will have effect;
- a condition requiring the person to undertake a specified course of education or training, or to obtain specified experience;
- a condition requiring that the person be supervised in the provision of nursing or midwifery care by a particular person or by a person of a particular class;
- such other conditions as the Board thinks fit.
Imposition of conditions if nurse or midwife has not practiced for 5 years
Where a nurse or midwife applies for initial registration or enrolment in South Australia they must provide evidence of nursing or midwifery practice within the past five years. This is only necessary if the education program was undertaken more than five years ago. After this time they may impose one or more of the following:
- a condition restricting the places or times at which the person may provide nursing or midwifery care;
- a condition limiting the nursing or midwifery care that the person may provide;
- a condition requiring the person to undertake a specified course of education or training, or to obtain specified experience;
- a condition requiring that the person be supervised in the provision of nursing or midwifery care by a particular person or by a person of a particular class;
- such other conditions as the Board thinks fit.
In the case of reinstatement, the Board may require an applicant:
- to submit a medical report or other evidence acceptable to the Board as to the applicant's medical fitness to provide nursing or midwifery care; or
- to obtain additional qualifications or experience specified by the Board before the Board determines the application (this may include the applicant undertaking an nmbSA approved re-entry program).
